DIY Handmade Sketchbook Workshop 

Intro to Bookbinding

 Do you use a sketchbook or art journal in your creative practice or would you like to start?  Have you ever made your OWN sketchbook or journal?!   During this beginner workshop, we will create a handmade sketchbook that can be used for drawing, writing, or both! You'll learn basic bookbinding terms and techniques, safely utilize necessary tools, and use the 5-hole “pamphlet stitch” to create a handmade book. Examples will also be shown of how to add multiple sections to create thicker books, methods for dealing with different-sized papers, and other ways you can individualize your books. In addition, we will discuss how to start or maintain a sketchbook or art journaling practice, and everyone will receive a list of prompts that can be used to spark your creative journey. Before you leave, you’ll be filled with ideas AND have a sketchbook/journal that YOU made in your choice of 9”x12” or 6”x9” size.   

Papers and some shared  tools will be provided.  $20  material fee due to the instructor at the start of class to purchase your kit!   

Kit: 

waxed linen thread

Large eye needles with dull tip (such as darning needle)

Awl

2 large binder clips

Small metal ruler 6"

bone folder

Optional: 4-6 sheets of decorative paper for book covers such as 12" scrapbooking paper 

(sets of two matching pages may be prefered)

 No previous bookbinding experience is necessary to enjoy this workshop!
